Understanding Casino Games

How casino games decide results, what RTP and volatility mean, and what they don't mean.

Written by Geralt

How are results decided?

  • Slots and digital table games (for example RNG blackjack and roulette) use a Random Number Generator (RNG). It picks each result at random the moment you play. In digital card games, the cards are shuffled at random for every round.

  • Live casino games use real cards, wheels and dealers, streamed to you live.

Every round is independent. Past results, your recent wins or losses, how long you've played and other players' results have no effect on the next round. No game, bonus round or feature is ever "due". Our games are made by licensed providers, and independent testing labs check them for fairness.

What is RTP (Return to Player)?

RTP is a game's average theoretical return, measured over millions of rounds by all players. If a game has 96% RTP, on average it pays back €96 of every €100 bet, and the remaining 4% is the house edge.

  • RTP doesn't apply to one player, one session or one deposit. You can lose a deposit without a single win, or win far more than you bet. Both happen within normal RTP.

  • Over time, the casino keeps a share of everything bet. That's how casinos work.

  • You can see the RTP of every game inside the game itself.

What is volatility?

Volatility (also called variance) describes how a game pays out:

  • High volatility: wins and bonus features are rarer but can be bigger, and long losing streaks are normal.

  • Low volatility: wins are more frequent but smaller.

Two games can have the same RTP but very different volatility. A high-volatility game can take hundreds of spins without a bonus feature, and then the feature can still pay less than you bet. Both are normal.

Where can I see a game's RTP and rules?

Open the game and tap the (i) button to see its RTP, rules, maximum win and, for some games, volatility and hit rate (how often a round pays something).

Common misconceptions

  • "My account is set to lose." No account has different odds. Everyone plays the same version of the game.

  • "I'm due a win after a losing streak." You aren't. Each round is independent, and chasing losses usually leads to bigger losses.

  • "A near miss means a win is close." It doesn't. A near miss is a loss.

  • "The casino or support can change my results." No one can, including support. We also can't refund losses or give money back because of a losing streak.

  • "Changing my IP, device, stake or time of day changes my luck." It doesn't. None of these affect the result.

  • "Demo mode works differently." It doesn't. Demo mode has the same rules and RTP as real-money play.

Think a game isn't working properly?

Contact support with the game name, the date and time, and the round ID if you can see it. We'll check the round and get back to you. If a game malfunctions, the affected rounds and payouts may be voided.

Stay in control

Casino games are entertainment, not a way to make money. Only play with money you can afford to lose. Loss limits and self-exclusion are available on all our brands to help you stay in control.
